'Wolves Drop Game One to Aeros

Pitching was the theme of game one of a Memorial Day double header between the SeaWolves and the Akron Aeros. Strong outings out of starters James Avery of Erie, and Steven Wright of Akron, paved the way for a low scoring game at Jerry Uht Park on Monday afternoon, won by Akron, 4-0.

The SeaWolves were held to only three hits, while being shut out for the fourth time this season. Wright started the game for Akron, his first start since May 11th, when he suffered a broken toe against Harrisburg. The knuckleballer held Erie to two hits in his three innings of work. Wright did walk three, but also added four punch outs. After Wright's day was over, Akron relievers Kyle Landis, Rob Bryson, and Preston Guilmet combined to go four shutout innings, giving up only one hit and two walks, while striking out four.

Erie starter James Avery started the day off with five shutout innings, but got into trouble in the sixth. Avery got the first out of the inning, but gave up three straight singles to Chun Chen, Nick Weglarz, and Ryan Rohlinger. Matt Lawson then lined out, giving Avery two outs in the inning. After getting ahead 1-2 on Roberto Perez, Avery threw a curveball in the dirt that skipped away from catcher John Murrian, allowing Chen to score from third. Perez followed that up with a sharp single into center, scoring Ben Copeland, who pinch ran for Weglarz. Jamie Johnson helped end the inning by throwing out Rohlinger at home on the play.

The Aeros added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh with three doubles off of Erie reliever Austin Wood. Kyle Bellows started it with a one-out double to left center. Later in the inning, Adam Abraham doubled home Bellows, and the next batter, Chen, doubled home Abraham.

Avery (5-4) took the tough-luck loss, going six innings, giving up seven hits and three walks, with seven strikeouts. Kyle Landis (2-1) got the win for Akron.

Game two of the double header will feature Patrick Cooper (0-0, 10.38 ERA) of Erie taking on Akron starter Paolo Espino (0-1, 2.45 ERA).
