
McGuire Sharp But Mets Rally Monday

(Binghamton, NY)---Deck McGuire retired the first 15 Mets to come to bat, but Binghamton broke up the perfect game in the sixth, scoring five times, and they went on to beat the Fisher Cats 6-2 on Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.
The teams played scoreless ball for the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, Mark Sobolewski (2-for-4, R) singled, Brian Van Kirk reached on a hit-by-pitch and Mike McDade singled. Kevin Howard (2-for-3, RBI) singled, scoring Sobolewski and Brad Glenn's sacrifice fly plated Van Kirk for an early 2-0 lead for the Fisher Cats (20-29).
Deck McGuire started for the Fisher Cats, retiring the first 15 batters before hitting Reese Havens to start the sixth. Kai Gronauer followed with a walk and both runners moved up on a sacrifice by Pedro Zapata. Back-to-back singles by Sean Kazmar and Josh Rodriguez tied the game at 2-2 to end McGuire's outing. The Mets would tack on three more runs in the frame on a single by Jefry Marte and back-to-back bases loaded walks to make it 5-2.
Binghamton made it 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Juan Lagares was hit-by-pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout, and scored on a single by Kai Gronauer.
McGuire (2-6) took the loss, working 5.1 innings, allowing two hits but four runs. He walked one and struck out two. Aaron Loup (0.1 IP) and Ron Uviedo (2.1 IP) also pitched in the game, each allowing a run in relief.
Collin McHugh (5-3) was the starter and winner for Binghamton (24-25). McHugh worked eight innings, allowing five hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out eight batters. Adrian Rosario worked around two walks in the ninth in a scoreless relief outing to give the Mets a split of the four-game set.
The Fisher Cats open a three-game series with the New Britain Rock Cats (Minnesota Twins Double-A) on Tuesday at 7:05PM at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
