Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Metairie, LA - Wil Myers hit the game-winning home run with one out in the 12th inning as Omaha slipped past New Orleans, 2-1, Friday night in the first of four meetings at Zephyr Field. The Storm Chasers won their third straight to improve to 30-19 and maintain their nine-game lead over Iowa in the American Conference North Division.
New Orleans pitching had retired 13 batters in a row before Myers slammed Gary Glover's fifth pitch of the at-bat over the wall in left for his third home run in the last four games to put Omaha in front for the first time in the contest. Roman Colon then retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning to earn the victory. The right-hander retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, including each of the last eight.
Neither team advanced a runner past second base before New Orleans finally broke through to plate the game's first run in the seventh. Gaby Sanchez singled with one out, moved to third on a Mike Cervenak base hit and came in to score on Nick Green's fly ball to center.
Omaha starter Vin Mazzaro was removed after a two-out double by Matt Dominguez later in the frame that pushed Cervenak to third before Jeremy Jeffress got Sergio Pedroza to pop out to thwart the rally. Mazzaro was charged with a lone run on six hits while striking out five and not walking a batter in pitching to a no-decision for a sixth time in eight turns.
Anthony Seratelli belted Wade LeBlanc's first pitch of the eighth for a home run, his seventh of the year and second in as many days, to get the game tied. The New Orleans' southpaw gave up five hits, did not walk a batter and fanned seven over nine innings but was also not involved in the decision after the Zephyrs missed an opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. New Orleans loaded the bases with one out but Jeffress induced Dominguez to bounce into an inning-ending double play to send the game into extra innings.
The series continues Saturday evening with Omaha left-hander Mike Montgomery taking the hill against New Orleans right-hander Tom Koehler. Coverage of the game gets underway at 5:40 pm and can be heard locally on AM 1180 and online at omahastormchasers.com.
