I-Cubs Nip Redbirds in Series Opener

MEMPHIS, TN - Iowa slipped by Memphis 2-1 Friday night at AutoZone Park.

The Redbirds struck first in the fifth with a safety squeeze by starting pitcher Joe Kelly, which would end up being the only 'Birds run on the night. The I-Cubs tied it up in the seventh with Brett Jackson's sacrifice fly to left field and took the lead in the ninth with a solo shot by Luis Valbuena.

Memphis attempted to rally in the bottom of the frame as Mitch Canham reach on an error, Zack Cox singled to center field and Ryan Jackson walked to load the bases with two outs. The 'Birds fell short with Mark Hamilton's pop out to the catcher in foul territory to end the game.

Kelly tossed seven innings of one-run ball, scattering four hits while walking one and striking out three on the night. Maikel Cleto took the loss for the Redbirds, allowing the winning run in his 1.2 innings of relief. Scott Maine earned his third with for the Cubs, blanking the 'Birds through two innings.
