Springfield Cardinals News Release
San Antonio, TX - Springfield got their six-game roadie off on the right foot by beating the Missions 3-2 Wednesday night and looked to make it three straight victories with a win Thursday.
Tyler Lyons went to the mound to start for the Cardinals in attempt to rebound after a rough start in Arkansas. Josh Geer, down from AAA Tucson, made just his second start with the Missions.
The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they plated a 1st inning run. After Kolten Wong singled to extend his hitting streak to a team high 10 games and Jermaine Curtis also singled to put runners on the corners, Chris Swauger bounced into a fielder's choice scoring Wong to make it 1-0.
San Antonio responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the 1st as Johnathan Galvez doubled and scored on an RBI single by Nate Freiman to tie the score 1-1.
Tyler Lyons ran into some trouble in the 3rd inning as he loaded the bases on a walk and two singles, but was able to induce an inning ending double play from Freiman to end the threat.
Still tied in the 5th, Oscar Taveras lined a double to left field and promptly scored on a double by Chris Swauger to give Springfield a 2-1 advantage.
Lyons continued in the game into the 6th and retired the first two batters he faced before allowing three straight singles, including an RBI hit by Jake Blackwood, to tie the game 2-2. Lyons would depart after the Blackwood single and Deryk Hooker took over and struck out the next batter to maintain the tie. Hooker would pitch two more scoreless innings allowing just one single.
Springfield had a golden opportunity in the 9th to take a lead as Jermaine Curtis tripled followed by two walks to load the bases with one out, but Jake Shaffer struck out and Greg Garcia lined out to left to keep them game tied into extra innings.
The Cardinals threatened again in the 10th and 11th with runners in scoring position, but could not find a clutch hit. Springfield was 2-for-17 and stranded a season high 17 on base in the game.
After Eric Fornataro got the Cardinals to the 11th with two flawless innings, Jesse Simpson tossed a scoreless 11th. But, in the 12th, Simpson walked Ali Solis and allowed a single to Jake Blackwood before striking out Rocky Gale. Justin Wright came in to face Raymond Fuentes and on the second pitch thrown, Fuentes lined a single to right scoring Solis to end the game with a 3-2 win for the Missions.
Springfield will conclude their three-game set with the San Antonio Missions Friday night. The Redbirds will send Scott Gorgen to the mound against Keyvius Sampson of the Missions. Game time is scheduled for 7:05pm.
The Cardinals return to Hammons Field Wednesday, May 30th for a six-game homestand against San Antonio and Corpus Christi. Great tickets are still available, so visit the Hammons Field Ticket Office, go online at springfieldcardinals.com or by call (417) 863-2143.
