Rock Cats Blank B-Mets, 3-0

May 22, 2012 - Eastern League (EL) New Britain Rock Cats

NEW BRITAIN, CT - New Britain's Logan Darnell, Luis Perdomo and Bobby Lanigan combined to shutout Binghamton, 3-0 on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium.

Darnell (5-2) scattered seven hits and struck out four while keeping the B-Mets off the board through seven scoreless innings.

Binghamton's Collin McHugh was cruising along matching Darnell zero-for-zero on the scoreboard.

"What a good pitcher's duel. Logan Darnell and McHugh were throwing up zeroes back and forth," said Rock Cats manager Jeff Smith. "As a manager, I love to see good pitcher's duels like that."

McHugh pitched his way out of a bases loaded jam before he served up a leadoff home run to Evan Bigley to open the seventh inning to break a scoreless tie. McHugh hit the next batter, Nate Hanson, and was quickly ejected from the game by the home plate umpire.

It was that one swing by Bigley that would be all the `Cats would need.

"Evan's been working hard," said Smith. "It hasn't been easy for him the past two or three weeks. All you can do is keep working hard and trying to get back to where you're at. It's good to have some results like that."

With the ejection of McHugh, the B-Mets turned to Bradley Holt to finish the seventh. James Beresford and Estarlin De Los Santos both reached base on bunt singles to load the bases with no outs. The hot-hitting Chris Herrmann drilled a double into left field to score pinch runner Mark Dolenc and James Beresford for the 3-0 advantage.

Herrmann finished the night a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for his second four-hit night in a row. In the past two games, he has collected eight hits in nine at-bats.

For the Rock Cats, Perdomo added a scoreless eighth and Lanigan closed it out in the ninth to notch his third save.

McHugh (4-3) finished with eight hits and two runs allowed. He struck out three.

The Rock Cats (27-17) are now 10 games over the .500 mark for the first time in May in franchise history.

ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME: C Chris Herrmann went 4-for-4 at the plate with a two-run double.
