
Pena Tallies Four Hits, Whitecaps Even Series

COMSTOCK PARK, MICH. - The South Bend Silver Hawks (23-21) built a 4-0 fourth-inning lead but the West Michigan Whitecaps (20-24) scored five unanswered runs to claim a 5-4 series-evening win Sunday afternoon in front of 6,354 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark. The Silver Hawks and Whitecaps will play the rubber match Monday.
Fidel Pena finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and Matt Helm went 3-for-5 for the Silver Hawks, who outhit the Whitecaps 11-10. It was Pena's second four-hit game this season.
Right-hander Michael Torrealba (3-1) earned the win in relief for West Michigan, tossing two scoreless innings with one strikeout. Kable Hogben (2-1) was pegged with his first loss this season, allowing one earned run on three hits over 1.2 innings.
The Whitecaps took their first lead of the series when Steven Moya broke a 4-4 tie with a solo home run to right field in the eighth inning off Hogben. It was the first home run Hogben has allowed since 2009 with the Missoula Osprey. The Silver Hawks took a 3-0 lead with a three-run third inning. Gerson Montilla doubled in a run, Matt Helm added an RBI single and another run came in on an error from first baseman Aaron Westlake. The Silver Hawks pushed it to 4-0 with Chris Ellison's RBI ground out in the fourth inning.
Dean Green hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead in half. Jason Krizan pulled the Whitecaps to within one with an RBI single in the fifth inning; Brandon Loy hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the seventh inning. John Pedrotty started for South Bend and got a no decision, allowing four earned runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings. Southpaw Kyle Ryan allowed four runs - two earned - on 11 hits over seven innings.
Ender Inciarte finished 2-for-4 for the Silver Hawks. Moya, Green, and Jason King all notched a pair of hits for West Michigan.
The Silver Hawks and Whitecaps play the final game of a three-game series Monday at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Mich. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. Right-hander Jesse Darrah (3-2, 4.30) starts for South Bend and he will opposed by righty Brennan Smith (1-2, 2.72).
