
Hawks Held Hitless into Seventh, Fall 5-2

FORT WAYNE - The Fort Wayne TinCaps scored four runs in the fifth inning and defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks (18-15) 5-2 Wednesday in the first game of a three-game series at Parkview Field. TinCaps (15-18) right-hander Adys Portillo carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Portillo (2-1) got the win for Fort Wayne and did not allow a hit until Matt Helm doubled with one out in the seventh inning.
Portillo, who came in with the tenth best ERA in the Midwest League, struck out six and walked two over the seven innings, lowering his earned run average to 1.41.
Jeff Shields (1-4) got the loss for South Bend, allowing five earned runs on five hits over 4.2 innings.
The TinCaps brought nine men to the plate in the fifth inning and knocked Shields out of the game. The TinCaps loaded the bases with nobody out against Shields, who got the first two outs without any runs scoring. Kyung-Min Na coaxed a bases loaded walk, Casey McElroy hit an RBI single and Travis Whitmore singled in two to bounce Shields from the game.
The Hawks began to chip away in the eighth inning against Luis De La Cruz. Chris Ellison hit a sacrifice fly and Gerson Montilla followed with an RBI double.
The Silver Hawks bullpen combined to throw 3.1 scoreless innings. Kable Hogben got the final out of the fifth inning, and breezed through the sixth and seventh innings. Matt Sample worked a perfect eighth inning and lowered his ERA to 2.87.
Whitmore paced the TinCaps with a 2-for-4 outing.
Ender Inciarte and Marc Bourgeois also added doubles for the Silver Hawks.
The Silver Hawks and TinCaps play game two of the three-game series tomorrow at Parkview Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST. Left-hander John Pedrotty (1-2, 6.67) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by righty Joe Ross (0-2, 6.26).
