Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
South Bend, IN - In an exciting series finale at Coveleski Stadium, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (15-13) fell to the South Bend Silver Hawks (17-11) 4-3 in 12 innings. The Hot Rods scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to tie the score, but Gerson Montilla doubled off of the wall in the decisive frame to deliver a series victory to the Silver Hawks. Matt Rice had three hits for the Hot Rods in the defeat.
After falling behind 2-0 early, the Hot Rods lit up the scoreboard at Coveleski Stadium for the first time on Friday night in the top of the fifth. Tyler Goeddel brought in the first run for Bowling Green when he doubled off the wall in right field, scoring Matt Rice. Ryan Brett was the next batter, and he drove in Juniel Querecuto with his groundout to shortstop. After four and a half innings, the Hot Rods and Silver Hawks were tied at two runs apiece.
South Bend immediately re-took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning and held a 3-2 advantage over the Hot Rods entering the top of the ninth inning. Drew Vettleson appeared as a pinch hitter for Alejandro Torres and began the inning with a bloop single to left field. After Vettleson advanced to second on a wild pitch, Juniel Querecuto singled to right field to score the hustling Vettleson, who slid under the tag at home to tie the score 3-3. The Hot Rods couldn't score later in the frame, and the two teams headed to extra innings.
After two and a half innings of scoreless baseball, the Silver Hawks used Montilla's RBI-double off the wall in left field to win the game 4-3 and the series two games to three. The defeat brings the Hot Rods nine-game road trip to a close with the team just winning two games.
