Portland Winterhawks News Release
Hawks Happenings On The Ice:
The Winterhawks are in the WHL Final for the second consecutive season and 10th time in franchise history, with wins in 1982 and 1998. It marks the first time since 1982 and 1983 the Hawks have made the championship series in consecutive seasons. Last year the Hawks advanced to the Final to take on the Kootenay Ice, who won the series in five games. Here is a look at Portland's history in the WHL Final:
1979: Lost to Brandon Wheat Kings in six games
1982: Defeated Regina Pats in five games
1983: Lost to Lethbridge Broncos in five games
1987: Lost to Medicine Hat Tigers in seven games
1989: Lost to Swift Current Broncos in in four games
1993: Lost to Swift Current Broncos in seven games
1998: Defeated Brandon Wheat Kings in four games
2001: Lost to Red Deer Rebels in five games
2011: Lost to Kootenay Ice in five games
This marks the first playoff series between the two teams since Edmonton's inception in 2007, but there is a connection between the two franchises, as the Winterhawks were located in Edmonton and called the Oil Kings until the team moved to Portland in 1976.
They first played in the Central Alberta Hockey League and won Memorial Cups in 1963 and 1966, then became one of the founding teams of the WHL in 1966 and won consecutive WHL championships in 1971 and 1972.
Oil Kings Head Coach Derek Laxdal played for the Winterhawks during the 1982-83 Memorial Cup season, amassing four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 39 regular season games, followed by two assists in 14 playoff games.
Hawks Happenings Off The Ice:
