Winning Streak Reaches Three After 6-1 Win

April 21, 2012 - Eastern League (EL) Binghamton Mets

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets won their third straight game and secured their first series victory with a 6-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs Saturday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Mark Cohoon allowed just one run over seven innings to collect his first win.

The contest started as a pitcher's duel with Cohoon and Portland starter Chris Martin putting up blanks in the first two frames. Matt Spring ended that trend by blasting a solo home run to left field in third, giving the Sea Dogs a 1-0 edge.

After being stymied for four innings by Martin, the B-Mets offense got on the scoreboard unconventionally in the fifth. Martin hit Joe Bonfe, the newest B-Met, to lead off the inning and watched Bonfe scamper to third on Juan Centeno's infield single to third. Pedro Zapata followed by bouncing into a double play that plated Bonfe and tied the game.

Portland threatened to break the tie in the top of the sixth. With two outs, Jeremy Hazelbaker doubled to right centerfield. The designated hitter attempted to score one batter later on Ryan Dent's single to left, but was gunned down by Eric Campbell to end the inning.

The B-Mets broke the game open in the sixth against reliever Will Latimer. The lefty retired the first batter he faced, but then allowed four straight singles to Binghamton. Jefry Marte started the rally with a hit to right, extending his hitting streak to ten games. Campbell followed with a single and Josh Rodriguez gave Binghamton the lead for a good with a base knock to right. Travis Ozga kept the rally alive with an RBI single to left.

Binghamton used speed to plate their final run of the inning. With runners at the corners and Juan Centeno at the plate, Ozga took off from first base. After watching the catcher Spring throw down to second, Rodriguez broke for home and slid in ahead of the tag. He became the first B-Met to steal home since Lorenzo Scott pulled the feat on April 8, 2011 against the Akron Aeros.

Buoyed by much-needed run support, Cohoon capped his day with a perfect seventh, needing just eight pitches to retire all three batters. Cohoon scattered seven hits over seven innings, the longest outing for any B-Mets starter this year. Kevin Mulvey worked around two hits to put up a scoreless eighth and Elvin Ramirez capped the win with a shutout ninth.

Binghamton added two insurance runs in the eighth against Josh Fields on an RBI double by Centeno and a run-scoring fielder's choice by den Dekker. Latimer was handed his first loss.

The B-Mets (8-7) look for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM. RHP Collin McHugh squares off against RHP Brock Huntzinger. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
