Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa (APRIL 17, 2012) - The River Bandits' Opening Night starter, Tyrell Jenkins, pitched four shutout innings in his second start of the season, and a late rally by the River Bandits offense was enough to squeeze out their season-high third win in a row, by a 2-1 mark, in front of 1,321 fans at Modern Woodmen Park Tuesday night.
The right-hander Jenkins allowed just one hit and struck out four LumberKings, and the River Bandits bullpen continued its strong campaign by allowing only one run on two hits in five innings of work.
After shortstop Matt Williams singled to lead off the bottom of the first, Clinton starter Stephen Landazuri kept Quad Cities (8-4) from tallying another base hit until the sixth, when Nick Martini singled. Landazuri pitched six innings, allowed two hits, walked five batters and struck out four.
The LumberKings (3-9) finally broke onto the scoreboard in top of the seventh, when right-hander Robert Stock entered the game for Quad Cities. With one out and one on, Stock walked Jean Acevedo. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance before a high chopper by Michael Dowd pushed a run across to give the LumberKings a 1-0 lead.
The lead did not last, though, as the River Bandits scored two in their half of the frame off Clinton left-hander Kyle Hunter. First baseman Jeremy Patton singled to right to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Roberto Reyes. River Bandits second baseman Luis Mateo then came through with a clutch double to tie the game 1-1. Mateo advanced on a Hunter wild pitch and scored the go-ahead run when Jesus Montero hit a sacrifice fly to left-center field.
Stock allowed the tying run to reach scoring position in the eighth, but right-hander Heath Wyatt came on to retire Clinton catcher Steven Baron to end the inning. He then struck out two batters in a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save, fanning left fielder Guillermo Pimentel to end the game.
With Kane County splitting a double-header at Beloit, the River Bandits are in sole possession of first place in the Midwest League Western Division for the second straight night.
In the series finale Wednesday night at 7 p.m. the River Bandits send left-hander Hector Hernandez (1-0) against LumberKings left-hander Jordan Shipers (1-0), as Quad Cities goes for its first sweep of a series in 2012.
