Tri-City Storm News Release
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - On a night that G Christian Frey made a career-high 43 saves and three more in the shootout, the Tri-City Storm would come back twice to prevail 3-2 in a shootout over the Sioux Falls Stampede. It was Frey's first win as a member of the Storm in his second attempt in as many nights on the weekend.
Sioux Falls (17-36-7, 41 pts - 8th in Western Conference) scored the opening goal at the 16:58 mark on C Justin Selman's 11th goal of the season, as the Stampede outshot the Storm 17-4 in the first period. However, Frey was outstanding making 16 saves in the first period keeping the Storm within a goal going to the second period.
Tri-City (26-33-1, 53 pts - 6th in Western Conference) tied the scoreboard on RW Grant Opperman's first-career USHL goal with 23 seconds left in the second period. LW Trevor Moore picked up the lone assist on the goal.
In the third period, the Stampede took the lead again on a 5-on-3 power-play goal at the 1:46 mark as RW Austyn Young netted his 12th of the season from D Joseph Lordo.
With Frey pulled and the extra-attacker on the ice, the Storm scored with 1:54 left in regulation to force extra-time on C Heikki Liedes' 12th goal of the season from RW Michael Vecchione and LW Thomas Nykopp.
Following overtime with Tri-City getting three more shots on goal, the Storm would score the lone goal in the shootout on an eventual game-winner by Vecchione.
Frey (4-7-1), who was a perfect three-for-three in shooters faced in the shootout, made 43 saves on 45 shots in the win for the Storm. G Charlie Lindgren (9-19-3) made 25 saves on 27 shots and stopped two of three shooters in the shootout receiving the shootout loss for the Stampede.
The shootout win for the Storm made them a perfect 4-0 for the regular season in the shootout, as the Storm were 7-for-14 in shootout attempts this season.
Tri-City finished the game 0-for-2 on the power play, while going 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The Storm will enter the playoffs Monday in the best-of-three games first round in Waterloo. All three games (if necessary) will be played in Waterloo in the first round.
