Roughriders Win 2012 Opener
April 6, 2012 - Texas League (TL) Frisco RoughRiders
SPRINGFIELD, MO-The "Riders offense may have been lacking, but the pitching was stellar, as the team snuck by Springfield 1-0 Thursday night at Hammons Field. Jose Felix had the "Riders lone RBI, a sacrifice fly, which scored Frisco's designated hitter Val Majewski in the top of the third.Fortunately the team's pitching rose to the challenge. Making his first start of the season, "Riders RHP Justin Grimm (1-0) tossed 5.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing only two hits, and striking out 10. Frisco's relief corps would stick to the same script, allowing only 2 hits over the remaining 3.2 innings, en route to the victory.
The RoughRiders picked up their lone run in the third inning off Springfield starting pitcher Scott Gorgen (0-1). Following a single and a stolen base by Val Majewski, Ryan Strausborger would get aboard on an infield single, advancing Majewski to third. The "Riders DH would score one batter later, on a sacrifice fly by Felix.
Springfield's best scoring opportunity came in bottom of the sixth, after Justin Grimm departed with one out and a runner on first. Coming on in relief, "Riders pitcher Carlos Pimentel walked the first batter he faced, allowing the Cardinals Jake Shaffer to move up to second. But the "Riders righthander would bear down, enducing a ground out from Oscar Taveras, before striking out Cards first baseman Xavier Scruggs to end the threat. Frisco pitchers combined to strike out 16 Springfield hitters on the night.
The "Roughriders and Cardinals will play game two of the three game series Friday night. Frisco LHP Miguel De Los Santos (0-0) will make his first start of the season, he will be opposed by the Cardinals' John Gast.
