Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Clash of Kings is set to begin this weekend for games 1 and 2 of the Oil Kings WHL Eastern Conference Semi finals. The WHL Regular season champion Oil Kings will welcome the sixth seeded Brandon Wheat Kings to Rexall Place on Friday and Saturday.
Edmonton is coming off a 4-0 sweep of the defending WHL Champion Kootenay Ice this past week. The Wheat Kings are well rested as well coming off a 4-1 series victory over the third seeded Calgary Hitmen. This series will feature two of the best power plays in the WHL. Edmonton finished the season second in the WHL with an 83.7% success rate while the Wheat Kings ranked third at 26.3%. The Edmonton special teams have been strong all season with the penalty kill ranked second in the WHL during the regular season and is currently second overall in the post season. The Oil Kings only allowed one power play goal in the last series holding Kootenay to 1 for 14 with the man advantage.
Another key match up entering the series will see Oil Kings Captain Mark Pysyk going head to head with Wheat Kings Captain Mark Stone. Both players were members of the bronze medal winning Team Canada at this year's World Juniors. Stone ended the regular season with 123 points and 41 goals to rank second in the WHL Scoring race. Pysyk, a first round pick of the Buffalo Sabres, remains one of the elite defensemen in the WHL. He finished the regular season with 38 points and is the anchor on an Oil Kings defense that allowed the least number of goals in the Eastern Conference.
Tickets for the first two games of the series at Rexall Place are on sale now at oilkings.ca, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or at the door. The 2012 Oil Kings Playoffs are presented by ATB Financial.
