Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Mark Barberio's power play tally with 7:37 left in regulation proved to be the difference as the Norfolk Admirals extended their winning streak to 23 games with a 2-1 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Tuesday at the Norfolk Scope. With the win, Norfolk clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference.
The Admirals took advantage of their first power play opportunity to hold a 1-0 lead after one period of play. Michel Ouellet led a 2-on-1 rush and faked a pass before sending a snapshot over the shoulder of Scott Munroe at 8:09.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would eventually knot the score with 4:37 left in the second period on Bryan Lerg's 25th goal of the season. Lerg fed a pass to Alex Grant and headed to the front of the net where he redirected the defenseman's wrist shot past goalie Dustin Tokarski.
Norfolk went ahead for good during a 5-on-4 advantage in the third period - their seventh of the contest. Barberio's shot from the blueline found its way through a screen and to the back of the net to make the score 2-1 in the Admirals' favor.
Munroe fell to 18-9-3 on the season despite allowing just two goals on 23 shots. Tokarski stopped 25 of 26 for the Admirals.
The Penguins went scoreless on two power play chances and was 5-for-7 on the penalty kill.
