Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants 2011-2012 season has come to an end, as the Giants lost game 6 of the Western Conference Quarterfinal 3-1 to the Spokane Chiefs Sunday night in Spokane. The Chiefs rallied to win the best of seven series 4-2.
The Giants got the start they were looking for as Cain Franson potted his 5th of the playoffs 1:40 into the game. Jackson Houck and Brett Kulak picked up assists. For the first time both teams got on the board in the first period thanks to Mike Aviani who beat Adam Morrison to tie the game at 1-1 after 20 minutes.
In the second period, the Giants didn't have that many chances but the best one came on the power play when Neil Manning was denied point blank by Eric Williams. The Chiefs outshot the Giants 17-8 in the period; the final shot was a dagger as Corbin Baldwin's slapper beat Morrison with 3.4 seconds remaining in the period to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.
For the fourth straight game the Giants faced a deficit going into the final period, but unfortunately they could not find a way to beat Williams. Mitch Holmberg added an insurance marker, his series leading 6th goal to put the Chiefs up 3-1. They held on the rest of the way, as Williams stopped all 12 shots he faced in the period to earn the victory and the series win. Spokane will move on to face Tri-City in the 2nd round of the WHL playoffs.
The loss brings to an end the WHL careers of 20 year olds Neil Manning, Adam Morrison, and Austin Fyten. The entire organization wishes them well in all their future endeavours.
