Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants (37-25-1-3) are into the final stretch of the regular season schedule, with just 6 games remaining. Of their final 6 games, 2 are on the road and 4 are at home beginning Wednesday March 7 vs. the Tri-City Americans. The Giants currently sit in 5th place in the Western Conference with 78 points on the year. They are tied in points with Spokane, but the Chiefs have a game in hand so they are in 4th place in the conference. It has already been determined the Giants and Chiefs will play in the opening round of the playoffs, all that is to be determined is which team will have home ice advantage.
Wednesday marks the 4th and final meeting of the season between the Giants and Americans. Tri-City (46-17-1-2) is 3rd in the Western Conference standings with 95 points, one point back of 1st place Portland. The Americans have 6 games remaining on their schedule, 2 on the road and 4 at home. Tri-City has won 8 of their last 10 games, including a 4-3 victory over Portland on Sunday night. The Amercians, who have given up the fewest goals in the league (175), also boast 3 scorers with 100 points or more, becoming the first team to accomplish the feat since the 1995-96 season. Brendan Shinnimin, who last week signed a free agent contract with the Phoenix Coyotes, leads the league with 120 points. Fellow 20 year old Adam Hughesman is 5th in the league with 104 points and Patrick Holland is 6th in the league with 101 points. Shinnimin is currently in the midst of a 17 game point streak in which he has 25 goals and 21 assists for 46 points.
Kamloops and Saskatoon were the last teams to have three 100 point scorers back in the 1995-96 season. For the Blades, it was Mark Deyell (159), Frank Banham (152), and Clarke Wilm (110). The three Blazers were Hnat Domenichelli (148), Jarome Iginla (136), and Bob Maudie (101).
This season the Giants are 1-2-0-0 vs. the Americans. Vancouver defeated Tri-City 5-4 in a shootout on Febuary 14, 2012 in Kennewick, Washington. The Americans beat the Giants 5-0 on October 15, 2011 at home and 11-4 at the Pacific Coliseum on January 13, 2012.
Wednesday is also a Giant Alumni Night honouring Evander Kane and presented by TELUS. 900 lucky fans will win a limited edition Evander Kane Bobblehead Doll, plus Kane will be added to the Giants 'Ring of Honour', joining Brett Festerling, Andrej Meszaros, Mark Fistric, Gilbert Brule, Milan Lucic, and Cody Franson.
Kane played 134 regular season games in a Giants uniform, scoring 73 goals, 65 assists, and 138 points. He won a Memorial Cup as a 15 year old with the Giants in 2007 and holds the franchise record for the most goals in a single season with 48. He was selected 4th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers and is now in his 3rd season with the organization which of course relocated to Winnipeg last summer. This year he has set career highs in goals (26) and points (46).
