Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs won a strange one Sunday afternoon, picking up a 13-4 victory over the visiting Erie Otters at the Gatorade Garden City Complex.
The game got off to an odd start as Erie starter Ramis Sadikov was without a backup after Devin Williams was injured a game earlier in the weekend. When Sadikov was injured in a collision with Alex Friesen less than two minutes in, centre Connor Crisp would be called upon to play in his first game of the season as an emergency goaltender. The period would be a strange one as Freddie Hamilton would open the scoring shorthanded, followed by a Jamie Oleksaik goal and a powerplay goal by Andrew Agozzino to give the IceDogs a 3-0 lead just over ten minutes in. The Otters would battle back however and close the score to 3-2 after 20 minutes.
The second period would see Crisp and the Otters continue to battle, but the IceDogs would open things up as Ryan Strome would score a hat trick in the period and David Pacan would add another, while Erie would score once to make it 7-3 after two. Shots after two were 27-26 in favour of Erie.
Erie would close the IceDogs lead to 7-4 early in the third, before the IceDogs would put their foot on the gas scoring six straight. Strome would score his fourth and fifth of the game, and Brock Beukeboom, Carter Verhaeghe, Brett Ritchie and Steven Shipley would all add markers to make it a 13-4 final.
Crisp would make 32 saves in the loss, picking up the games first star and a standing ovation from the IceDogs faithful for his gutsy performance.
The IceDogs will next return to the ice on Thursday night when they host the visiting Mississauga St. Michael's Majors at 7pm.
