Bulldogs Score Early to Defeat Marlies 2-1

HAMILTON, ON - The Hamilton Bulldogs successfully defended a 2-1 first period lead to defeat the Toronto Marlies in the fourth "Battle of Ontario" match-up of the season.

Hamilton was quick to get on the board, with Alexander Avtsin scoring his sixth of the season just 59 seconds into the game. The Marlies tied the score at 1 on a power play double deflection in front of Peter Delmas' net. Marcel Mueller got the marker at 7:17 in the first period, but with just 57 seconds to go in the first, Andreas Engqvist gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.

The second and third periods were scoreless, with both Delmas and Toronto Marlies netminder Ben Scrivens making key saves to keep their teams competitive. Toronto spent most of the final two minutes of the game on the power play but the Bulldogs hung on for a 2-1 victory. The 'Dogs also led the Marlies on the shot clock, registering 29 shots to Toronto's 27.

The Bulldogs will face the Milwaukee Admirals at Copps Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 before taking on the Toronto Marlies for the 2012 AHL Outdoor Classic presented by Molson and Boston Pizza on Saturday, January 21st, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
