Canton Takes Charge Late at 2012 NBA D-League Showcase
Published on January 11, 2012 under NBA G League (G League) News Release
RENO, NEV., Jan. 10, 2012 - Manny Harris was cold most of the night, until he helped put the game in the freezer.
With the Canton Charge clinging to a one-point lead late in the fourth quarter against the Dakota Wizards, Harris calmly drained an open 20-footer to give Canton a 95-92 lead. He then grabbed a long rebound, got fouled and drained two free throws as the Charge went on to defeat the Wizards, 99-94. It's the first-ever NBA D-League Showcase victory for Canton, which is owned and operated by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
That Harris, who spent his entire rookie season with the Cavaliers last year, helped put the game on ice is a bit ironic. Back in November, Harris suffered freezer burn after using the cooling chamber at Nike's facilities in Oregon with wet socks on. He was unable to receive treatment from team doctors because of the NBA lockout. The healing process reportedly didn't go according to plan, and Harris was eventually cut by the Cavaliers without having the chance to compete for a spot.
Tough break for a kid who went undrafted out of Michigan in 2010, yet still managed to appear in 54 games as a rookie, averaging 5.9 points and 2.6 rebounds. Harris finished with 15 points on 4-for-12 shooting, to go with four rebounds.
Keith McLeod, who was in training camp with the Utah Jazz, led the Charge with 18 points and a game-high nine assists. Frank Hassell added 14 points and 17 rebounds.
McLeod played four seasons in the NBA from 2003-07, with his best season coming in 2004-05 with the Jazz, when he averaged 7.8 points and 4.5 assists in 26.1 minutes. Hassell, an undrafted rookie out of Old Dominion, has recently dropped 30 pounds in the hopes of making himself more attractive to NBA teams.
Mike Anderson led the Wizards (7-8) with 19 points. Edwin Ubiles, who was in training camp with the Golden State Warriors and one of the team's final cuts, added 15 points and eight rebounds.
Canton (9-8) returns to action Thursday against Iowa. Dakota also plays Thursday against Austin.
