P-Bruins Earn Point in S.O. Loss

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins earned a point in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Calle Ridderwall scored both goals in regulation and Josh Hennessy added a goal in the shootout.

Despite zeros across the scoreboard at the end of the first period, Providence was not short on scoring chances, controlling much of the offensive play throughout the frame. The teams exchanged time in the penalty box, with both squads earning 5-on-3 opportunities, but neither could find the back of the net. Providence's best opportunities of the frame came on the power play. The dynamic power play unit of Carter Camper, Josh Hennessy and Jordan Caron danced around Bridgeport's defense, but bad bounces kept them off the board.

The Sound Tigers got on the board in the opening minutes of the second frame to take a 1-0 lead. Tony Romano's wrap-around attempt trickled underneath Anton Khudobin's pads at 2:42. The lead would only last a minute as Providence's Ridderwall tied it up with his second goal in as many nights at 3:37. Breaking in the Sound Tiger's zone, Kirk MacDonald found Ridderwall by himself along top of the right circle. Ridderwall slipped the puck past Kevin Poulin's glove to tie the game at one apiece. Kyle MacKinnon also assisted on the play. The newest P-Bruin, Bobby Robins, made his presence known when he dropped the mitts with Bridgeport's Benn Olson in a drawn out exchange of upper cuts. It was a battle of the goaltenders for the remainder of the second frame as neither team could get on the board, sending the club's into the final intermission tied.

The Sound Tigers broke the tie at 12:03 of the third period. Casey Cizikas' wrist shot from the top of the far faceoff circle found its way through traffic in front and beat Khudobin five-hole to give Bridgeport a 2-1 lead. The rookie Ridderwall continued to shine and answered Bridgeport's goal at 16:57. He lit the lamp for the second time as his shot found its way through traffic in front of Bridgeport's Poulin. MacKinnon and MacDonald assisted on the play, earning their second points of the night. Neither team could score in the final minutes, sending the game into overtime.

Bridgeport largely controlled the momentum of the extra frame, but Khudobin was flawless between the pipes, forcing a shootout to decide the game. The Sound Tigers dominated in the shootout, scoring four goals on four attempts. Hennessy's lone goal wasn't enough to lift the P-Bruins past the Sound Tigers and they fell 3-2.

Khudobin suffered the loss, stopping 32 Bridgeport shots in regulation. Poulin made 22 saves in regulation and was flawless in the shootout for the win.

The P-Bruins are back in action on Friday, January 13 versus the Worcester Sharks. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. for "Kids T-Shirt Night," which are free to the first 1,000 kids 12 and under.
