BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators saw a two-game win streak come to close as they fell to the Rochester Americans by a score of 3-2 in Saturday night hockey action at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Phil Varone scored a pair of goals, including the game winner, and David Leggio made 42 saves to lead the visiting Amerks to the win.
Rochester struck first in the game capitalizing on a power play opportunity at 13:57 of the opening period. Varone earned his first of the night as he flipped his own rebound over a lunging Mike McKenna. Zack Kassian, drew the lone assist on the tally.
Rob Klinkhammer then tied the game for the B-Sens as he backhanded home his own rebound at the ten minute mark of the second. The goal is Klinkhammer's team-leading 12th of the season and extends the forward's point scoring streak to seven games. Andre Petersson and Corey Locke drew the assists, their first of two points each in the game.
Igor Gongalsky broke the tie to give Rochester a 2-1 lead just 1:06 into the third period as he converted on a shorthanded breakaway.
Petersson would tie the game at two at 6:13 as he tipped in Eric Gryba's shot from the point to earn his tenth goal of the season and seventh point in three games. Locke would be credited for the secondary assist, notching his second point of the game.
Rochester reclaimed the lead at 8:37 as Varone deflected Joe Finley's shot from the left point past McKenna to put the Amerks back on top, 3-2.
The B-Sens had a late opportunity to tie the game as they played the final 2:44 of regulation with the man advantage, including 59 seconds of 5-on-3 hockey, but Leggio and the Amerks held the Binghamton power play at bay to hold on for the win.
Binghamton ended the night 0-for-6 on the power play, while Rochester was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
McKenna made his third straight start in goal for Binghamton, stopping 25 of 28 shots as he fell to 10-10-0 on the season. The loss ends a season-high five game win streak for the netminder.
The B-Sens are in action again on Friday, Jan. 13 as they host the Syracuse Crunch at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $18.50 for side seating, $17.50 for end seating.
