G-Braves Lose Close One, Playoff Hopes Remain Alive

The Gwinnett Braves fell to the first place Durham Bulls by a score of 4-3 in the final game of a quick two game series in Durham, N.C. The G-Braves (75-62) lose a game in the International League South division standings and now trail the Durham Bulls (78-58) by 3.5 games for the division lead. With the loss, the G-Braves remain tied for the IL Wild Card with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (76-62), pending the results of the IronPigs vs. SWB Yankees game, which went into extra innings a on Tuesday night.

It Was Over When: After being named 2011 IL MVP today, LF Russ Canzler hit an RBI single off of RHP Anthony Varvaro in the bottom of the 8th inning, which allowed SS Tim Beckham to score and seal the game for the Bulls.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: LHP Yohan Flande started the game for the Braves and was serviceable, but did not receive the decision. Flande went 6.0 IP allowing 3 R/ER on 6 H with 0 BB and 5 K's. RHP Peter Moylan relieved Flande and pitched a perfect inning, striking out the side. RHP Anthony Varvaro pitched the 8th inning and earned the loss allowing 1 R/ER on 2 H with a IBB and a K. Varvaro moves to 2-8 on the year.

At the plate: 1B Mauro Gomez continued his hot streak going 1-for-4 with an RBI and hit his team best 33rd double of the season. Gomez's RBI in the top of the first inning extended his streak to five straight games with at least one RBI. LF Stefan Gartrell, who on Tuesday was named to the 2011 Post-Season IL All-Star Team, had a solid game going 2-for-3 with a R, 2B and a BB. RF Wilkin Ramirez was the other Brave to have an extra base hit, a double in the second inning. He finished the day going 2-for-4 with the 2B and a R.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: The Bulls used a total of five pitchers to get through the game. RHP Lance Cormier started the contest for the Bulls, but did not receive a decision. Cormier went 2.0 IP and allowed 2 R/ER on 5 H with a BB and a 2 K's. RHP Jay Buente pitched the bulk of the game, coming in for Cormier and pitching 3.0 IP and allowing a H with 3 K's. RHP Dane De La Rosa earned the win in relief. The righty went 2.0 IP allowing a H with 3 K's on his way to his 6th win of the year. RHP Rob Delaney earned the save, his 12th of the season, going 1.0 IP with a H.

At the Plate: Leadoff hitter SS Tim Beckham, who scored the winning run for the Bulls, highlighted the offense for Durham on Tuesday night. Beckham finished the night going 3-for-4 with 2 R, and a 2B. 1B Dan Johnson was the only other Bulls player to have a multi-hit game. Johnson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a BB. 2011 IL MVP LF Russ Canzler went 1-for-4 with 3 K's, but did hit an RBI single in the 8th to win the game for the Bulls.

On Deck: The Gwinnett Braves head to Norfolk, VA to take on the Tides for the final time in 2011. The G-Braves and Tides will pick up action at 6:15 pm, completing a game that was suspended on 7/25 due to rain. Following the game, the G-Braves will face the Tides in their regularly scheduled contest. Pitchers are yet to be announced for the two clubs.
