Workman Dazzles as Drive Defeat 'Jackets, 3-0

Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Augusta
GreenJackets' (65-64, 34-25) batters looked befuddled following Friday night's game at Fluor Field, and with good reason.
Brandon Workman penned a masterful piece of pitching in game one of the critical series, guiding the Drive (72-59, 34-27) to a 2-0 win.
A 2010 second round selection out of the University of Texas, Workman (5-7) knows how to bring it in pressure situations.
The 6'5" right-hander hurled 7.0 scoreless innings, limiting the
GreenJackets to just a pair of singles while fanning five.
And Workman made sure there was some distance in between Augusta's two lone hits, retiring 15 consecutive batters from the second to the seventh inning.
Over his last three starts, Workman has amassed a 1.35 ERA (5 ER/20 IP) with 15 strikeouts and only three walks, while posting a 2-0 record over that span.
The Drive broke up the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, plating a pair runs with two outs in the inning.
Matty Johnson led off with a single, but after moving to second on Felix Sanchez's sacrifice bunt it appeared as if he would be stranded in scoring position.
But Brandon Jacobs made sure that wasn't the case, roping a triple off Mike
Kickham (5-9) to right-centerfield before scoring on
Xander
Bogaerts single.
The 18-year-old
Bogaerts added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, hitting a laser over the Green Monster for his 14th home run.
A 2011 draft pick, right-hander Andrew Jones preserved the Drive's ninth shutout of the season, adding a pair of scoreless innings.
The only time the
GreenJackets threatened was in the top of the eighth when Joel Weeks laced a two-out triple.
Representing the only runner that Augusta was able to get into scoring position, Weeks was stranded there when Jones ended the frame by striking out Ryan
Scoma.
Four of Greenville's batters - Jacobs,
Bogaerts, Johnson, and Henry Ramos - accounted for eight of the team's 10 hits, with each tallying two hits apiece.
The Drive and
GreenJackets continue their five-game series on Saturday, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM from Fluor Field.
Coming off a start in which he took a perfect game into the sixth inning on August 23rd, right-hander Scott
Swinson (4-4, 3.20 ERA) will toe the rubber for Greenville.
Augusta will counter with left-hander Ryan Bradley (3-1, 3.80 ERA).
Tomorrow night is the final Saturday home game of the 2011 regular season, featuring an Elvis theme at the ballpark.
