Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA (August 24, 2011) - Joe Serafin shined through seven spotless innings, leading Winston-Salem to a 3-0 blanking of the Salem Sox on Wednesday night at LewisGale Field. Kyle Colligan's solo homer off Manny Rivera led off the fifth, breaking a scoreless stalemate, and the Dash added two more runs off Anatanaer Batista in the seventh. Meanwhile, the Red Sox only had one baserunner reach as far as second base as Serafin spun seven goose-egg innings and Ryan Kussmaul earned his sixth save by dealing the eighth and ninth.
Serafin, the soft-tossing lefty out of the University of Vermont, matched a season-high with seven strikeouts, surrendering just five singles in his seven shutout innings. Working incredibly quickly, he kept the Sox off balance and never threw a pitch with multiple runners on base. Serafin improved to 5-10 and shrunk his ERA to 5.48.
Rivera nearly matched his southpaw counterpart, but one mistake in six innings served him with the setback. In the top of the fifth, Kyle Colligan smashed the first pitch of the inning down the left field line, and the soaring fly thudded off the foul pole for a solo homer. Colligan's seventh round-tripper of the season made it 1-0, and served as the lone blemish to Rivera's otherwise sterling stat line. Rivera allowed one run on three hits in six innings, with two walks and two strikeouts, but was saddled with the loss, falling to 0-2.
In the seventh, Mike Blanke greeted Batista with a solo bomb to deep left. Up 2-0, the Dash added one more in the seventh, with Colligan scoring on Daniel Wagner's single up the middle. Jordan Flasher entered in the eighth and held the Dash without a run in the final two frames, but Kussmaul did the same for the Dash, entering in relief and shutting down the Sox in the final two innings.
With Kinston's loss to Frederick, the Dash moved within a half-game of the first-place K-Tribe. Salem remained five and a half back with 11 games remaining in the regular season.
The Red Sox and Dash will complete their four-game series on Thursday night, with Chris Hernandez and Jake Petricka squaring off on the mound. First pitch is slated for 7:05.
PROGRAMMING NOTE: Because of a conflict with Redskins preseason football, the Red Sox-Dash finale will be heard on exclusively on the internet on Thursday night. Listeners can tune in to www.salemsox.com beginning at 6:45 for a unique simulcast, as "Voice of the Red Sox" Evan Lepler joins "Voice of the Dash" Alex Vispoli for a dual broadcast.
