
Drew Martinez joins Kernels from Orem; Travis Witherspoon to Inland Empire

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announce that OF Drew Martinez will join the Kernels from Orem of the Pioneer League and that OF Travis Witherspoon has been promoted to Inland Empire of the California League. Abe Flores, Director of Player Development for the LA Angels, announced the move on Saturday.
The Angels selected Martinez in the 10th round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft out of Memphis University and he played in 37 games at Orem, batting .276 with a double, 9 RBI and five stolen bases in six attempts.
Witherspoon was a member of the Kernels 2011 Opening Day Roster and played in 102 games for the Kernels, batting .245 with 12 HR and 42 RBI. He was the team leader with 12 HR and 44 stolen bases in 53 attempts.
Martinez will arrive in Cedar Rapids today and be available for tonight's 5:05 pm home game against Peoria. With today's transactions, the Kernels active roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with two players currently on the disabled list.
The Kernels begin a seven game home stand with a 5:05 pm game tonight against Peoria. It's Jimmy Buffett Night featuring a post-game concert by the Cedar Island Band and fireworks presented by Genencor with media sponsor Mix 96.5 FM. Gates open at 4:00 pm.
