Silver Hawks Push Winning Streak to Five
August 20, 2011 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Comstock Park, MI - The South Bend Silver Hawks earned their fifth straight win - tying the best winning streak of the season - with a 5-3 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Saturday evening at Fifth Third Ballpark. However, with Fort Wayne winning as well, the Silver Hawks remain five games out of a playoff spot with 16 to play in the second half.
The game didn't start well for the Silver Hawks with West Michigan scoring two runs in the bottom of the first against J.R. Bradley (WP, 6-14). However, Bradley would settle down, leaving the bases loaded twice and departing after five innings having allowed only three runs to earn the victory.
South Bend got Bradley off the hook early, scoring three times in the top of the second to take a lead they would not relinquish. After Yazy Arbelo and Matt Helm singled, Gerson Montilla drove a two run double down the left field line to tie the game. Montilla advanced to third when the throw went home and scored on a Roberto Ortiz groundout for a 3-2 lead.
The Silver Hawks then took advantage of walks from West Michigan starter Alex Burgos (LP, 6-4) for two more runs in the fourth. Helm and Ortiz drew the walks, followed by back-to-back RBI singles from Ramon Castillo and Ender Inciarte for the 5-2 lead.
Both bullpens were fantastic on the night, with West Michigan's relief corps tossing five scoreless innings and South Bend's bullpen putting up four scoreless frames. Kable Hogben (ND) had two scoreless relief innings for the Hawks, followed by Randy Hamrick (ND) and Eury De La Rosa (SV, 8) with an inning each.
Narodowski and Montilla finished the night with two hits each, while Arbelo extended his hitting streak to seven games - matching his season high.
The four game series continues with game two on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Tyler Green (3-7, 5.17 ERA) will start for South Bend against West Michigan's LHP Kyle Ryan (4-9, 3.54 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 12:40 PM Eastern Time on www.sportsjuice.com and www.silverhawks.com.
