Peoria Chiefs News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs committed three errors which led to four unearned runs in a 6-2 series opening setback to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Saturday night. The loss leaves the two teams tied at 22-32 on the second half with the Chiefs are 55-69 overall.
The Chiefs left Anthony Giansanti in scoring position in the first inning and error number one immediately helped the Kernels grab the lead against Brett Wallach in the bottom of the frame. Rolando Gomez reached on an error by Rubi Silva to start the inning and stole second base. With one out and Gomez at third, Jeremy Cruz put the Kernels up 1-0 with a RBI groundout.
Wallach walked a pair in the second but pitched out of a bases loaded jam after an error by Richard Jones at first base. In the third the Kernels loaded the bases with a single and two walks, Hernandez put the Kernels on top 3-0 with a single to left before Wallach got out of the inning.
The Kernels took advantage of another Chiefs' infield miscue in the fifth to knock Wallach from the game. Cruz reached on an error at third base by Dustin Geiger to start the inning and Wallach struck out Ricky Alvarez. Randal Grichuk tripled home Cruz for a 4-0 lead and Robinson Lopez took over for Wallach on the mound. An out at the plate left Brandon Decker on first base with two outs before Hernandez crushed his first home run of the season for a 6-0 Kernels lead.
Justin La Tempa came into the game for the Kernels with a 2-8 record and an ERA just under five but he kept the Chiefs off the board until the seventh inning. Geiger ended the shutout with a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning with one out, line drive shot over the left-field wall. Tyler Kehrer relieved La Tempa in the eighth and allowed a RBI single to Micah Gibbs with two outs in the ninth for the final run of the game.
Wallach (0-3) took the loss allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out two. Lopez allowed one run on one hit over 1 2/3 innings. Yohan Gonzalez and Daniel Berlind each threw a perfect inning out of the Chiefs' bullpen.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Dustin Geiger (3B) - Geiger helped the Chiefs avoid a shutout with a solo home run in the seventh inning. He has a RBI in two straight games and the homer was his first as a Chief.
