SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies stranded the game-tying run on third base in the ninth inning and failed in their comeback attempt in a 6-5 loss against the Florence Freedom on Friday night at GCS Ballpark. The loss snapped a two game winning streak for Gateway.
Florence jumped on Gateway starter Brad Stone (0-4) in the first with two runs on three hits. Drew Rundle drove in two on a bases-loaded single to give Florence a 2-0 lead.
Gateway (19-29) got on the board in the second with a Joe Agreste solo homer to right field, his sixth of the season.
Florence (24-24) scored a single tally in the third on Cole Miles' second homer of the season to make the score 3-1.
The score stayed the same until the seventh went Florence scored three runs on three hits to take a 6-1 lead.
Gateway received a sacrifice fly from Brian Harris and a two-run homer from Kent Gerst in the seventh to inch closer and bring the Freedom lead to two runs.
Gerst struck once again the ninth with a two out run-scoring triple that made it 6-5, but DJ Fitzgerald grounded out to second to end the game.
Stone took the loss for Gateway, giving up three runs in six innings of work.
Gateway received multi-hit games from Gerst and Logan Parker.
The Grizzlies and Freedom resume their series on Saturday night at GCS Ballpark. Corey Davisson (1-2) gets the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 7:05.
