Salem, VA (July 8, 2011) - Heavy showers doused the possibility of nine innings on Friday night, suspending the rubber match between Salem and Wilmington in the bottom of the second inning at LewisGale Field. The Blue Rocks assumed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a pair of doubles and a sacrifice fly, but Mother Nature interrupted the action, prompting a delay that began at 7:33, just 24 minutes after the game began. About 35 minutes later, the decision was made to officially suspend the contest, and the two clubs will resume Friday's affair when Wilmington comes to Salem again on August 26 as part of a doubleheader.

Ryan Stovall led off the second inning with a double against Drake Britton, and he scored two batters later when Tim Ferguson doubled him home. An error on the inbound throw moved Ferguson to third, and Jose Bonilla's sac fly to right gave Wilmington a 2-0 lead.

Blue Rocks starter Michael Mariot set down the side in order in the first, and Bryce Brentz was batting with a 1-2 count to begin the second when rain commenced, and the umpires quickly signaled for the tarp. Strangely, when the clubs resume playing on August 26, all statistics will count for the month of July, since the game officially began on July 8.

The homestand continues for the Red Sox on Saturday night, with Winston-Salem arriving for a three-game set at Salem Memorial Ballpark. Pete Ruiz is scheduled to start the opener opposite Brad Furnish, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05.
