JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - Jackson relievers Moises Hernandez, Stephen Penney, Brian Moran and Steve Delabar combined to allow just one run on two hits in eight innings Wednesday as the Generals defeated Mississippi 4-2. The bullpen was needed because during the bottom of the second, amidst controversy Andrew Carraway hit Braves batter Ernest Mejia on an 0-1 pitch and was ejected by the home plate umpire. The Generals victory snapped a two game losing streak. Carraway went one inning before the ejection and allowed one run on no hits. Hernandez entered in the second inning and allowed a homerun but settled down to just give up one run on two hits in 3,2 innings. Penney (4-2) was credited with the victory after pitching 1.2 innings scoreless, striking out one and walking one, not allowing a hit. Moran earned a hold with 1.2 scoreless and Steve Delabar struck out one and tossed a perfect ninth to log his eighth save. Braves starter Arodys Vizcaino (2-3) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out seven and walked two. Rich Poythress extended his hitting streak to five games Tuesday by finishing 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Scott Savastano and Carlos Triunfel each were 2-for-4 to lead the Generals. Cory Harrilchak had two of Mississippi's three hits, going 2-for-3 with the homer and two RBI's.
AT A GLANCE: Rich Poythress has a 5-game hitting streak and is batting .380 (20x54) with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple and 7 RBI in his last 13 games. Since joining the Generals on June 30th, Vinnie Catricala is batting .407 (11x27) with 3 runs scored, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 10 RBI.
TODAY'S STARTER: RHP Erasmo Ramirez makes his 16th start tonight for the Generals in the series finale against the Braves. He walked a season high 5 batters in 6.0 innings, suffering a loss against Chattanooga on Saturday. Ramirez was a Southern League All-Star this season.
ALUMNI REPORT: Former General Kyle Seager has been promoted from Tacoma to Seattle and will join the team in Anaheim tomorrow and be activated for the 4-game series vs. the Angels starting Thursday. He has blistered the Pacific Coast League since being promoted from Jackson on June 23. He has recorded a hit in each of the 12 games he has appeared, batting .455 (25x55) with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs and 12 RBI (.500 OBP, .673 SLG, 1.173 OPS).
PANKOVITS WINS 750: In the team's second try, Generals Manager Jim Pankovits earned his 750th career managerial victory Sunday. This is Jim's first season with the Mariners and Generals and 13th season as a Minor League skipper. Pankovits managed the New York Penn League Affiliate for the Houston Astros, Tri City the previous two seasons, winning the title in 2010.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1914 - Suffering heavy losses from Federal League competition in Baltimore, Jack Dunn, owner of the International League Orioles, offers Babe Ruth (plus Ernie Shore and catcher Ben Egan) for $10,000 to old friend Connie Mack. Mack refuses, pleading poverty. Cincinnati, which has a working agreement giving them the choice of two players, takes outfielder George Twombly and shortstop Claud Derrick. Dunn finally peddles his threesome to new owner Joe Lannin of the Red Sox for a reported $25,000.
