Bulls Back Into First Place Tie After 8-5 Win Over Gwinnett

(Lawrenceville, GA)Brandon Guyer singled, doubled, homered and drove in four runs, leading Durham to an 8-5 win over Gwinnett on Friday night. Both teams (36-31) are tied atop the South Division after splitting the first two games of the four-game series.

Guyer doubled to left to drive home the first of three runs in the first against Yohan Flande (2-3). After the Braves got one back in the third on an Ed Lucas solo homer, Guyer launched a three-run homer to left-center in the fifth to help chase Flande, and give Durham a 6-1 advantage.

After shortstop Julio Lugo hit a three-run double in the sixth to chase Dirk Hayhurst (3-1) and cut Durham's lead to 6-4, Guyer started the seventh with a bunt single. Robinson Chirinos, who had three hits, delivered a two-run single with two out for an 8-4 advantage.

Gwinnett scored one in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Durham collected 12 hits, as the top three hitters in the order were 7-for-14 with seven runs scored. Hayhurst went the first 5.1 innings to win for the second straight start.

Lefty Alex Torres (2-5) starts for Durham on Saturday night against righty Erik Cordier (1-2). Coverage of game three of the four-game set begins at 6:50 on 620 the Buzz, with first pitch at 7:05.
