Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania- Two big mistakes proved costly as the Portland Sea Dogs dropped a 6-4 decision to the Erie SeaWolves on Thursday night. The Sea Dogs made two errors on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Rawley Bishop in the eighth inning, allowing two runs to score for the final difference. With the win, the SeaWolves take the last two of the three-game series, handing Portland its second straight loss. Rob Waite (3-2) earned the win with a scoreless eighth inning while Austin Wood (2) struck out the side in the ninth for his second save.

The deciding play started with a leadoff single by Francisco Martinez off Portice in the bottom of the eighth. After a failed first attempt, Bishop managed to drop a sacrifice bunt off to the third base side. Portice went over to play the ball, but threw it over the head of Oscar Tejeda covering the bag. Jeremy Hazelbaker struggled with the ball bouncing off the side wall, allowing Martinez to score. Hazelbaker made a throw to the plate, which caused Bishop to try and take second. Tim Federowicz overthrew Vladimir Frias at second with no one backing up the play. That sent Bishop all the way around for the second run on the play. It resulted in errors on Portice and Federowicz, two of four miscues for Portland on the night.

The game started out well for the Sea Dogs, getting out to a 3-0 lead. Tony Thomas drove in his first run with Portland in the first inning. Frias made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the second. Alex Hassan then launched a two-out pitch over the left field wall for his sixth home run of the season, giving Portland a three-run lead.

Erie came back against Sea Dogs starter Alex Wilson in the bottom of the fifth. After the first two batters reached on singles, Wilson got the next two out. Then, he briefly lost command, walking the next two batters, and bringing in the first run for the SeaWolves. Martinez followed with a double that scored three runs thanks to a misplay by Hassan in centerfield, giving Erie a 4-3 lead. The Sea Dogs tied the game at four in the seventh inning when Frias scored on a balk by Luis Marte.

The Sea Dogs six-game road trip continues tomorrow night in Akron for the start of a three-game series with the Aeros starting Friday night. Portland returns to Hadlock Field for a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder starting Tuesday, June 21st. That night will be Jimmy Buffett night. This weekend, the Sea Dogs will have their 4th annual Father's Day 5K Road Race, starting at 9:15 AM on Sunday. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
