Seattle Sounders FC News Release
Seattle Seeks to Sustain Unbeaten Run Against FC Dallas, Real Salt Lake
Part of the pack of contenders in the Western Conference, Seattle Sounders FC has a chance to break out of the bunch by the end of the week. Yet it's a tall task for the Rave Green since they must confront two of the best in MLS within a span of three days. Seattle concludes a three-game home stand on Wednesday evening versus FC Dallas at 7 p.m. PT on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field. On Saturday night Sounders FC tests Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium at 6 p.m. PT.
Wednesday's match will be broadcast on KONG 6/16 and ROOT Sports will air the game live with Arlo White calling the action. Saturday's game in Sandy, Utah will be aired live on KONG 6/16 and THIS-TV. Rob Stone and Peter Fewing will describe the action.
After this week pace slows to one match per week until Open Cup play begins late next month. Seattle plays at Chicago on June 4.
Although hit hard by injuries Sounders FC (4-3-5, 17 points) has fought on, earning points in nine of the last 10 starts to share third in the West table. A stoppage time goal by Jeff Parke produced a 1-nil home win over Sporting Kansas City last Saturday, extending the current unbeaten string to three games.
FC Dallas (5-3-3, 18 points), runner-up in MLS Cup 2010, lost League MVP David Ferreira on April 23 but that same date was the start of a six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2). Dallas and Real Salt Lake finished in a scoreless deadlock on Sunday in a match delayed by lightning in the second half.
Three of the previous four meetings with the Texans have ended tied, including both 2010 matches which featured late equalizers by FC Dallas. Seattle got the lone victory in the series, 2-1 in the final game of 2009.
Backed by North America's largest fan base, Seattle has sold-out 38 straight MLS home games and lost only once (8-1-4) in the last 13 regular season fixtures on its home turf.
No team has proven more formidable at home the past three years than Real Salt Lake. Since moving into Rio Tinto at the end of 2008, RSL has gone 24-1-11. It's been 29 matches and two years since the lone loss, to Kansas City on May 16, 2009, and visitors have managed to score only one goal in four games this season.
Real Salt Lake (5-1-2, 18 points) has the fewest losses in MLS and has at least two games in hand on its West brethren because of postponements due to CONCACAF Champions League action earlier this spring. It was runner-up to Mexico's Monterrey in the final series.
Seattle and RSL are knotted at 1-1-2 in the regular season series. Both games were drawn in 2010. The teams also met in a 2009 U.S. Open Cup play-in game, won 4-1 at home by Sounders FC.
Both matches this week will be broadcast live on 97.3 KIRO FM and La Gran D 99.3 FM.

Upcoming Competition Schedule (All times Pacific)
Wednesday, May 25, 7 p.m. - FC Dallas, Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field, Seattle
Saturday, May 28, 6 p.m. - at Real Salt Lake, Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, Utah
Saturday, June 4, 5:30 p.m. - at Chicago Fire, Toyota Park, Bridgeville, Ill.
Saturday, June 11, 7:30 p.m. - Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field, Seattle
Saturday, June 18, 4 p.m. - at Toronto FC, BMO Field, Toronto, Ont.
The Beat Goes On
Sounders FC are two points ahead of last year's 12-match pace, when the record was 4-5-3, and is on par with the 2009 start of 4-3-5. That has been accomplished in spite of lengthy absences of Steve Zakuani (leg fracture; six games to date), O'Brian White (blood clot; five games), Mauro Rosales (hamstring; three games) and Brad Evans (hamstring and adductor; four games).
Nineteen different players have started at least once and 23 have seen action. Twelve players have either scored or assisted on a goal.
A Premium on Goals
While coping with injuries to some key players, it's a challenge to integrate all the pieces and shift the attack into high gear. Since scoring a season-high three goals against Toronto FC on April 30 Seattle has been limited to a single strike in the last four games. Against the next two foes, a single goal could prove huge.
FC Dallas arrives in Seattle having not allowed a goal in 399 minutes and four straight shutouts. Real Salt Lake has allowed only two goals in its first eight games, has posted three straight shutouts and owns a scoreless streak of 280 minutes at home. FC Dallas and RSL battled to a nil-nil draw at Pizza Hut Park on Sunday. Each team's offense has stalled of late. It was the second straight scoreless game for Real Salt Lake and Dallas has totaled three goals in the last four matches.
Road Warriors
In their short history, Sounders FC have made a name for themselves on the road. Among the accomplishments: winning the 2009 U.S. Open Cup final at D.C United, breaking the Columbus Crews' record 22-game home unbeaten streak in 2009, and becoming the first road team to win at Red Bull Arena in 2010. Altogether, the Rave Green are nearly .500 (14-15-12) on the road in domestic league, cup and playoff games.
What's more, it can be argued that no MLS team has come closer to winning at Rio Tinto Stadium in the last couple years. In the first RSL home game since winning the 2009 MLS Cup, Seattle entered the fourth minute of stoppage time with a 2-1 lead, only to have Alvaro Saborio come off the bench to equalize in the dying seconds. Real Salt Lake has since extended its home unbeaten streak to a league record 29 straight.
It Takes a Village
Jeff Parke's goal was the first by a defender this season and only the second by a member of the back four in the last 30 regular season matches. All told, there have been eight scored by defenders, led by Tyrone Marshall's three.
It also marked the first time that defenders combined exclusively for a goal by Seattle. Tyson Wahl got the assist from his corner kick. This season midfielders and defenders account for 10 of the team's 14 goals.
Parke becomes the second Seattle defender to score while the defense posts a shutout. Leo Gonzalez did it first, against New England in 2010. Parke's only other MLS goal came on June 12, 2004 as a rookie for New York. It was Wahl's second career assist; he earned his first against Chicago last season.
Parke Wins Player of the Week
Jeff Parke was voted MLS Player of the Week, becoming the first defender to be so honored since 2009. Parke headed home the game-winning goal in stoppage time to lift Seattle over Sporting Kansas City, 1-0.
Parke is the first defender to win the award since Chad Marshall of Columbus in Week 22 of the 2009 season, and the first Sounders FC player to win the award since Steve Zakuani in Week 29 of 2010. Parke narrowly edged out Philadelphia striker Carlos Ruiz for this week's honor.
Returning to Health
Last week's game marked Mauro Rosales' return to the lineup following a two-match absence, and it was the Argentine's first start in five outings. Rosales played 69 minutes and got off one shot. Erik Friberg, who missed his first match on May 14 against Portland, was back in the 18.
While they are still sidelined indefinitely, O'Brian White and Steve Zakuani were well enough to attend their first match since being hospitalized late last month. White attended the team's pre-game meeting and both players watched the game from a suite.
Only midfielder Osvaldo Alonso and goalkeeper Kasey Keller have played each match and both have played all 1080 minutes. Keller has started 67 regular season matches in a row-dating to April 25, 2009-the longest current streak in MLS. The only match he failed to finish during this run was at FC Dallas on April 22, 2010. Keller left after the first half and a collision with Jeff Cunningham.
Clean Sheets & More
The clean sheet for Seattle was the third of the season and all have come in the last six games. Two of those shutouts have been delivered by a changed back four. Jeff Parke replaced Patrick Ianni alongside Jhon Kennedy Hurtado as Sigi Schmid continues to give one of those three a timely rest. The defense has allowed only 0.92 goals per game. Kasey Keller now has 24 career shutouts over two-plus seasons. Only Nick Rimando (28) of Real Salt Lake has more since the start of 2009.
The Late Show
Seattle and Kansas City have produced some thrilling late shows on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field the past two years. Jeff Parke's winner last week, coming in the third minute of stoppage time, is second only to a Mike Fucito goal to beat the then-Wizards. There have now been five stoppage time goals for the Sounders FC, with four of them determining the outcome.
94+ - Mike Fucito vs. Kansas City (winner), 4/1/7/2010
93+ - Jeff Parke vs. Kansas City (winner), 5/21/2011
92+ - Fredy Montero vs. Chicago (winner), 8/28/2010
91+ - Fredy Montero vs. D.C. United, 6/10/2010
91+ - Alvaro Fernandez at Philadelphia (equalizer), 4/16/2011
90+ - Own goal vs. D.C. United, 6/10/2010
Three of a Kind
Sounders FC has certainly been affected by the loss, and their opponents this week know just how they feel. Steve Zakuani suffered a fractured leg on a horrific tackle on April 22, and the star winger who led the team in scoring at that point is now out of action indefinitely. A day later, on April 23, David Ferreira of FC Dallas broke an ankle on a challenge by a Vancouver defender. Ferreira, who had sparked his team's run to the MLS Cup final, was the league's MVP in 2010. And on May 7 another member of the 2010 MLS Best XI was cut down. Real Salt Lake talisman Javier Morales sustained a fractured leg against Chivas USA.
Series Trigger Men
Fredy Montero has registered either a goal or an assist in the last three meetings with FC Dallas. He scored in both of last year's games, most notably a 40-yard free kick at Frisco that was voted MLS Goal of the Week.
Nate Jaqua has scored a career-best six times against Real Salt Lake. All of those goals have come in the last eight games versus RSL.

One of two teams remaining with a perfect record in the MLS Reserve League, Sounders FC (3-0-0, 9 points) resumes League play on Monday, May 30 at Portland (1-1-0, 3 points). Recap: Sounders FC 1 vs. Sporting Kansas City 0 - May 21, Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field
Jeff Parke's header in the final minutes of second-half stoppage time lifted Seattle to a dramatic victory in front of 36,098 fans on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field.
Parke's game-winner came in the third minute of stoppage time when Tyson Wahl sent a corner kick into the box. Wahl's cross found Parke, who managed to slip through the defense of Kansas City and connect with an 8-yard header that snuck inside the far post.
The goal was Parke's first as a member of Sounders FC and his first since June 12, 2004, his rookie year with New York. It was his first game-winner.
Wahl earned his first assist of the season and the first game-winning assist of his career.
Sounders FC held an advantage in total shots, 12-7, but managed to put only two on goal.
Kasey Keller earned recorded three saves, including the vital diving stop in the fifth minute. It was his 24th career shutout and third of the season.

Rosales, Sounders FC's co-leader in assists, returned to the starting lineup and saw action for the first time since aggravating a hamstring injury on May 4 at DC United.

Dallas Series Notes

The series was even last season as Dallas was able to score late equalizers in both matches (Jeff Cunningham's stoppage time penalty kick at Dallas and David Ferreira's 87th minute leveler in Seattle). Seattle is looking for its first shutout in the series as both sides have scored at least one goal in all four matchups. Fredy Montero scored twice against Dallas last season, including a 40-yard free kick at Pizza Hut Park. In a February preseason training game in Orlando, Florida, Brek Shea supplied a goal and assist to lead Dallas to a 2-0 victory over Sounders FC.
