Salem Red Sox News Release
Salem, VA (May 2, 2011) - Zach Gentile went 2-2 with a walk and drove in the go-ahead run in the last of the seventh as Salem surpassed Kinston 3-2 in front of 3,116 on Monday night at LewisGale Field. The Red Sox bullpen once again delivered the goods, surrendering just one run over five awesome innings to clinch the victory. Tom Ebert struck out four over three frames, allowing one run, to earn his first Carolina League win, while Cesar Cabral tossed two pressure-packed innings to slam the door and earn his sixth save of the season, tied for the most in the circuit.
Starter Drake Britton was erratic, but minimized the damage to just one run in four roller-coaster innings. Kinston surged ahead 1-zip in the top of the second when a slew of walks and wild pitches allowed Kyle Smith to score. Britton issued three walks and three wild ones in the frame, but with two outs and runners at first and second, catcher Dan Butler launched a pick-off laser to second base, where Gentile tagged out Roberto Perez sliding back into second, helping Britton escape. The Salem southpaw bounced back to hold the Tribe without a run in the rest of his outing, striking out four along with two hits and four walks allowed.
The Sox took advantage of Kinston sloppiness, scoring a pair in the third to take the lead. After Michael Almanzar reached on a fielding error by third-baseman Adam Abraham and Derrik Gibson was plunked by starter Clayton Cook, Gentile dropped down a perfect bunt. Cook fielded and fired a missile down the right field line, the second error of the inning that allowed Almanzar to score, while Gentile and Gibson moved to second and third. Peter Hissey's sacrifice fly gave Salem a 2-1 edge, but Gentile was stranded at third.
Tyler Holt crushed a 3-1 fastball off the wall in left for an RBI double in the top of the seventh that tied the game, but the Sox responded immediately after the stretch. Almanzar reached on an infield single, Gibson's bunt once again induced a Kinston throwing error, as reliever Jose Flores chucked another wild throw down the right-field line, sending the runners to second and third. With a 1-2 count, Gentile muscled a soft liner to left, over the brought in infield, for the RBI single that proved to be the game-winning knock.
Salem loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Reynaldo Rodriguez popped up, and the Sox left the bags packed for the second time in the ballgame. Salem went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position, but stranded seven men in the game.
With a 17-6 mark, the Sox are now two and a half games ahead of Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division. The Pelicans fell to Potomac 3-2 on Monday evening in Woodbridge.
The homestand continues with another 7:05 matchup between the Red Sox and K-Tribe on Tuesday night, with Chris Balcom-Miller pitching opposite Giovanni Soto at Salem Memorial Ballpark.
