New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Major League third baseman Edwin Encarnacion will begin rehabilitation with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, tonight during the Eastern Division Championship Series at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The Fisher Cats will take on the Trenton Thunder in game three of the best-of-five playoff series at 6:35 p.m.
Encarnacion, 27, has served parts of seven seasons at the Major League level with the Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays organizations. The Caguas High School (P.R.) product was traded to the Blue Jays along with New Hampshire pitcher Zach Stewart in exchange for Scott Rolen to the Reds on July 31, 2009. This season Encarnacion has put up a .246 average with 13 home runs and 36 RBI in 276 at bats with the Blue Jays.
The ninth-round pick in the 2000 amateur draft by the Texas Rangers, Encarnacion made his MLB debut on June 24, 2005. The 6'2, 230-pounder played five years in the National League, totaling a .262 average, 71 home runs and 263 RBI in 1,764 at bats. During the past two seasons in the American League, Encarnacion has recorded a .244 average with 21 round-trippers and 59 RBI.
Encarnacion played 80 games for Toronto in 2010 before being placed on the 15-day disabled list on August 28. He has yet to see action on the diamond since, and will be making his Fisher Cats debut tonight. Encarnacion was placed on the DL for the first time in 2010 on April 24, and made a rehab stint for the Dunedin Blue Jays in the Florida State League from May 14-16. The infielder was also designated for assignment on June 21 before Toronto selected his contract from Las Vegas on July 2.
Game three of the Eastern Division Championship Series will be played tonight at 6:35 p.m. at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. New Hampshire right-hander Scott Richmond (0-0, 2.70) will be opposed by Trenton southpaw Manuel Banuelos (0-1, 3.52). Radio coverage can be heard on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman and Dick Lutsk beginning at 6:15 p.m.
New Hampshire will host game three of the series, and game four (if necessary) on Friday and Saturday September 10 and 11 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Atlas Fireworks Shows will follow both games.
