Tri-City Americans News Release
EVERETT, WA - Brett Thompson scored twice and Brett Findlay had a four-point night as the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (1-2) took down the Tri-City Americans (2-1) 6-2 in the penalty-marred conclusion to both team's portion of the Everett Silvertips Pre-Season Classic, presented by Holiday Inn - Downtown Everett.
Using the power play, the Americans gained the upper hand early in the contest, as Zachary Yuen got the scoring started. However, despite seven power play chances in the period, Tri-City could not capitalize on the man-advantage.
Meanwhile, nearing the half-way mark of the period, the Greyhounds' Nick Cousins knotted the game at one. Then, eight minutes later, Trevor Morbeck gave the 'Hounds a 2-1 lead which held through the first intermission.
But, just 2:01 into the second period, Jordan Messier connected for his first goal of the pre-season, tying the game at 2-apiece. However, Sault Ste. Marie went on to connect on three of their four power play chances in the frame, getting two goals from Thompson and another from Dominic DeSando, to break open the game at 5-2.
With less than two minutes remaining in the contest, the Greyhounds added another goal, this one from Findlay, to cap the score.
The contest featured a combined 172 penalty minutes (Tri-City, 92), 132 of which came in the third period. But the Americans could only go 1-for-9 on the power play, while the 'Hounds finished 3-of-10 on the man-advantage.
Drew Owsley started the game in goal for the Americans, collecting 15 saves on 19 shots in just over 30 minutes of work. Rookie Chris Driedger came on to play the second half of the contest, finishing with 15 saves on 17 shots. Meanwhile, the 'Hounds' Matt Murray played the entire 60 minutes, stopping 28 of the 30 shots he faced in the win.
With the Pre-Season Classic in the books, Tri-City will now turn their attention to their own tournament, the Red Lion Hotels Pre-Season Tournament, being held at the Toyota Center in Kennewick from Sept. 9 through 12. The Americans will kick-off their portion of the tournament schedule on Friday night, when they play host to the Central Division's Lethbridge Hurricanes. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Tickets are on sale through all Ticketmater outlets, including the Toyota Center box office, all Fred Meyer locations or online at www.ticketmater.com.
