Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels prevailed in a brisk pitcher's duel, 1-0, over the Bowie Baysox in front of a capacity crowd of 9,560 on Sunday night at The Diamond. The ninth sellout crowd of the season for Richmond allowed them to overtake Reading and claim the overall Eastern League attendance title, having drawn 457,273 with one date remaining.
Nick Noonan started the game-winning rally for the Squirrels when he singled to lead off the eighth inning against right-hander Bob McCrory. Tyler La Torre walked behind him to put two aboard with nobody out. Ryan Lormand then attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt. However, catcher Steve Lerud and McCrory didn't communicate and nobody played the ball, which turned into a bunt-single to load the bases. Brock Bond then gave the Squirrels the only run they needed with an RBI single into center field. McCrory (3-4) took the loss for Bowie.
Right-handers Craig Westcott for Richmond and Steve Johnson for Bowie dueled for nearly seven innings. Although both were brilliant, neither would factor in the decision as the game remained scoreless through their departures. Westcott finished his season with 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. He did walk four, but struck out seven. Johnson topped him, shutting out the Squirrels for seven innings on one hit. He walked one and struck out six.
Right-handed closer Rafael Cova struck out the side in order in the ninth to preserve the win for the Squirrels. In order, he fanned Danny Figueroa, Ryan Adams and Joel Guzman to earn his 22nd save of the season.
The final game of the 2010 season is scheduled for 12:05 PM on Monday afternoon at The Diamond. RHP Felix Romero (4-3, 3.42) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Pedro Viola (3-3, 3.34) for the Baysox.
