HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - One day after clinching a wild card spot in the Southern League playoffs, the BayBears hammered the Huntsville Stars, 9-1, on Sunday afternoon at Joe W. Davis Stadium to even their final regular season series at two games apiece.
Ollie Linton put the BayBears (74-62, 38-30) in the top of the first with his third home run of the season off Huntsville (67-72, 34-35) starter Michael Fiers (1-1). Fiers would get burned for two more runs in the fifth as the BayBears broke a 1-1 tie.
Taylor Harbin started the frame with a double and advanced to third after an error and a walk loaded the bases. Harbin broke for home when Wade Miley (5-2) hit a bouncer to second. Brett Lawrie's throw home was late which allowed Harbin to score, putting the BayBears up 2-1. Chris Rahl also touched the plate in the fifth after a double play off the bat of Dan Kaczrowski.
Miley was strong for five innings as he pushed his final season ERA down to 1.98. He allowed three hits and one unearned run while matching a season-high with eight strikeouts.
After Miley left the contest, the BayBears continued to pour on the run support. Evan Frey walked to start the sixth inning and after a stolen base, came home on a base hit by Harbin. In the seventh, Kaczrowski tripled Jake Elmore to the plate and scored on a groundout by Linton.
Robert Hinton surrendered five tallies in his two innings of relief. Chris Rahl smacked a three-run homer off Hinton in the eighth to put the BayBears up by eight. Bryan Shaw and Roque Mercedes each tossed a pair of scoreless frames to finish the contest.
