Arkansas Travelers News Release
North Little Rock-It was all pitching on Saturday night as the Springfield Cardinals rounded up enough offense to hold off the Arkansas Travelers in the 3-1 loss at Dickey-Stephens Park. Ryan Brasier (7-12) started the game for the Travs, and pitched seven good innings, giving up just one run on a solo homer from Xavier Scruggs. The Cards would pick up two more runs in the eighth inning, but were held silent in the ninth. Although the pitching did their best to keep the Cards down, the Travs bats waited to long to get going and couldn't manage the ninth inning comeback.
After their tenth consecutive loss the Travs second half record falls to 27-41 (53-85 overall), and the Cards second half record improves to 38-30 (76-62 overall).
Brasier suffered the loss after giving up one run on just three hits while matching his season high with eight strikeouts. Brian Broderick (11-2) started for the Cards and earned the win after throwing seven innigs, and giving up no runs on just two hits. Adam Reifer (17) earned the save after throwing one inning and giving up only one run.
In the second inning the Cards took the lead after Xavier Scruggs hit a solo homerun to straight away center giving the Cards a 1-0 lead.
The Travs had a chance to tie the game in the fourth inning, but would come up short and leave a runner stranded on third. Abel Nieves led off with a triple to the right field wall. The Cards then brought their infield in on the grass to make the play at the plate. Efren Navarro popped out to third for out number one. Roberto Lopez hit a hard liner right at the shortstop for the second out of the inning. Jeremy Moore then hit a fly ball to shallow left field that Cards left fielder Daryl Jones made a sliding catch to end the inning.
In the sixth inning the Travs tried to get a man across the plate, but couldn't find the big hit, stranding a runner on third. Beau Brooks took a lead off walk, and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Rian Kiniry. Abel Nieves grounded to third for out number two, but Brooks went into third after Matt Carpenter made the throw to first. Navarro flied out to center to end the inning and leave Brooks on third base.
Jeremy Thorne entered the game in the eighth inning to relieve Brasier, and gave up two runs to the Cards. Jones led off with a single, and moved to second after Jermaine Curtis was hit by a pitch in the elbow. Thorne attempted to pick off Jones at second, but the throw hit off the glove of Nieves and went into shallow center, allowing both runners to move up to second and third. The Travs moved the infield in and Luis De La Cruz hit a ground ball to second for the first out, not allowing the runners to advance. Jones then came in to score on a wild pitch from Thorne increasing the Cards lead to 2-0. Antone DeJesus walked to put runners on the corners, and Jose Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Curtis making the score 3-0. Carpenter then popped out to third to end the inning.
The Travs tried to come back in the ninth inning, but it was too late to get anything going. After two quick outs Navarro singled, and moved to second on a defensive indifference. Roberto Lopez then singled to left field to bring in Navarro cutting the lead to 3-1. Jeremy Moore single up the middle to put runners on first and second, but Charlton Jimerson grounded to first to end the game.
