Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (September 2, 2010) - Bryan Paukovits and Wil Myers are both long gone from Burlington, but their contributions to the Bees have not been forgotten. This fact became plain on Wednesday when the Kansas City Royals named them Burlington Bees Pitcher and Player of the Year.

Paukovits posted a 3.32 ERA with a 3-3 record in 13 appearances (nine starts) with the Bees before his promotion to Wilmington. He struck out 65 while walking only 16, and held opponents to a .189 batting average. His last appearance in a Burlington uniform came at the Midwest League All-Star Game in Fort Wayne, where he tossed a scoreless inning as one of three Bees player representatives. Paukovits, a Lakeside, California native, was selected in the 44th round of the 2006 draft, and missed the entire 2008 season recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Myers, 19, made quite the impression with his bat while in Burlington. The backstop batted .289 with 10 home runs, 19 doubles, 45 RBI and a .908 OPS in 68 games prior to his July 1 promotion, and was also selected to the All-Star Game. He has not slowed down since reaching Wilmington, batting .340 in his first 54 games at High-A with 15 doubles, four home runs, 34 RBI, and a .950 OPS. The Thomasville, North Carolina native was selected by the Royals in the third round of last year's draft. This is his first full season of professional baseball.

A spate of former Bees received organizational hardware as well. John Lamb, who began his 2010 season with the Bees, received the Paul Splittorff Pitcher of the Year award after a campaign that saw him play at three levels over the course of the season, including eight starts with the Bees to open the year. The southpaw has a 2.33 ERA in 27 starts with 152 strikeouts in 143.0 innings. Mike Moustakas, a member of the Bees' 2008 Midwest League championship club, is the George Brett Hitter of the Year. Though he will not turn 22 until September 11, he has batted .325 in 113 games split between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha. His 35 home runs place him in a tie for the minor league lead, and his 121 RBI are second only to Rich Poythress of the California League's High Desert Mavericks.

Additionally, former Bees Kila Ka'aihue (2003 & 2004), Everett Teaford (2007), Clint Robinson (2008), Eric Hosmer (2009), and Ryan Stovall (2010) were honored for their contributions to individual teams in the Royals chain. Ka'aihue, Robinson, Hosmer, and Stovall took Player of the Year honors at Omaha, Northwest Arkansas, Wilmington, and Burlington, N.C. respectively, while Teaford was the Pitcher of the Year at Northwest Arkansas.

The Bees come home one last time to take on Clinton in a three-game series starting on Saturday night. Sunday and Monday's contests will be 2:00 affairs, with the season finale on Labor Day serving as a Dollar Monday presented by Miller Lite. Enjoy hot dogs, popcorn, Pepsi products, and student and senior tickets for just a dollar.
