Evansville Otters News Release
(MARION, Ill.) - Stephen Head hit a go-ahead home run and the Miners added a pair of insurance runs late for a 5-2 Southern Illinois win over the Evansville Otters.
Otters shortstop Marcel Champagnie led off the game with a home run for the Evansville 1-0 lead but Southern Illinois rallied right back.
In the second, Stephen Head singled in the tying run and another man scored on a throwing error by the Otters.
Down 2-1, Evansville tied the game in their next opportunity when Derek Wiley plated another run to even the score.
The game would stay tied 2-2 into the bottom of the seventh inning as runs were tough to come by against Otters starter Chad Edwards and Miners pitcher Brett Scarpetta.
Stephen Head struck again with a go-ahead solo home run for the 3-2 lead and the Miners tacked on two more runs late for insurance.
It proved to be valuable as Evansville brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but reliever Erik Draxton struck out Vinnie Scarduzio to end the game.
Southern Illinois is currently 63-30 with the sweep as Evansville drops to 35-56 on their fifth consecutive loss.
Brett Scarpetta (8-5) earns the win after throwing 7 23 innings. The loss goes to Chad Edwards (4-6) who allowed three runs (two earned) in seven innings. Erik Draxton also earned his fifth save of the season.
The Evansville Otters have tomorrow off before returning to action with a three game series at the River City Rascals. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT on Friday night at TR Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Missouri.
