Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Kevin Reese pitched seven solid innings and the Traverse City Beach Bums exploded for six runs in the fifth as the Beach Bums downed the Windy City ThunderBolts 8-4.

The win, coupled with an Oakland County sweep in their doubleheader over Kalamazoo leaves the Beach Bums and Cruisers tied for the East Division wild card slot with four games to go. Traverse City holds the tiebreaker by virtue of the season series win over Oakland County. Both teams trail Windy City by two games for the East Division lead.

After Windy City scored a run in the first, two teams exchanged zeroes on the scoreboard through the top of the fifth. Leading off the bottom half of the inning, Andrew Franco delivered a double. A perfect sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Alia moved Franco to third where he stood when Jason Codiroli delivered a single to right to bring home Franco and knot the game at 1-1. Matt Brown followed with his second hit of the night and Michael Diaz was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chase Burch came up and hit a sac fly to left to score Codiroli and advance the other two runners. The aggressive baserunning proved big as J. T. Hall smacked a two-strike pitch into centerfield to score Brown and Diaz and put the Beach Bums up 4-1. Traverse City would get two more runs later in the inning on errors to take a five-run lead.

In the eighth, the two teams traded blows, the ThunderBolts putting up a pair in the top half of the frame before the Beach Bums salted the game away with a bases loaded single from Brown for an 8-3 lead.

The win went to Kevin Reese (10-9) who turned in his fourth excellent outing against Windy City on the year. Reese pitched into the eighth allowing six hits and three runs (two earned). He walked one and struck out five. Richard Barrett (7-3) took the loss for the ThunderBolts.

Offensively, Brown collected three hits on the day for Traverse City while Franco and Brad Miller delivered two hits each for the second straight game.

The series wraps up on Thursday with Jonny Bravo (5-2, 2.96) on the mound for Traverse City against Sean Toler (7-1, 2.13) for Windy City. It is a Thirsty Thursday where fans will receive $1 off 22 oz PEPSI fountain products and $1 off beer. The first 500 fans in the ballpark will receive a Beach Bums Fan Poster.
