Tillman, Snyder Lead Tides over Braves
August 31, 2010 - International League (IL) Norfolk Tides
Chris Tillman tossed 6.2 shutout innings and Brandon Snyder belted his ninth home run as the Tides beat the Gwinnett Braves 5-2 Tuesday night at Harbor Park.Tillman (11-7) allowed five hits and two walks while striking out three, becoming the first Orioles minor leaguer to reach the 11-victory mark this season. The 22-year-old threw 63 of his 100 pitches for strikes, and he's now 3-0 with a 2.48 ERA (8-ER, 29.0-IP) with six walks and 25 strikeouts over his last five starts.
The Tides jumped out to an early lead in the second frame, as Snyder lifted a fly ball off Jose Ortegano (3-10) just over the right field wall to plate Nolan Reimold and give Norfolk a 2-0 lead. Norfolk extended its lead with an unearned run in the sixth, then added two more runs in the seventh on an RBI double by Paco Figueroa and a sacrifice fly by Jeff Salazar.
Gwinnett plated both of their runs in the eighth, as Joe Thurston lined a two-run homer into the Tides bullpen off Armando Gabino. Thurston, Brent Clevlen and Antoan Richardson each had two hits apiece for the Braves, who fell to 69-68 with the loss.
Dennis Sarfate struck out the side in the ninth inning on 11 pitches to register his 19th save of the season.
The two clubs will finish their season series on Wednesday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park slated for 7:15. Tim Bascom (3-7, 7.31) will take the hill for Norfolk against right-hander Erik Cordier (NR).
