Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
Just as the big-league Red Sox struggled to break through against the Yankees' C.C. Sabathia in New York on Saturday afternoon, the PawSox offense failed to muster anything significant against Scranton's David Phelps at McCoy on Saturday night. As a result, the Yankees topped the PawSox, 6-1, behind a barrage of home runs.
Juan Miranda got things started in the first. After Kevin Russo singled and Colin Curtis reached on an error by second baseman Niuman Romero, Miranda blasted a shot to right to make it 3-0. In the sixth, Jesus Montero sent one out to center after the first two men made outs, and then Greg Golson clocked one to left with one out in the seventh.
Golson's homer chased PawSox starter Ramon Ramirez, who gave up five runs (four earned) in 6.1 innings in falling to 2-3 on the year.
Early on, the PawSox got a one-out single from Daniel Nava in the first, a leadoff double from Lars Anderson in the second, and a leadoff single from Josh Reddick in the third. Only Anderson advanced past first, though, and all three were stranded.
After that, Phelps (2-2) took over. He retired the side in order in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, setting down 13 in a row before Aaron Bates grounded a single up the middle with two outs in the seventh. A Yamaico Navarro chased Phelps from the game and put two men in scoring position, but Royce Ring came on to strike out Jack Hannahan swinging to end the threat.
Bates's single extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Reddick extended his own hitting streak to eight games-he's now hitting .514 (19-37) over that stretch.
The Yankees tacked on a run in the ninth against Michael Bowden on singles by Eric Bruntlett and Chad Moeller and an RBI double by Russo. The PawSox finally got on the board themselves in the bottom half when Lars Anderson walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, and came home on another single from Bates against Amaury Sanit.
The PawSox will look to earn a series split in the finale of the four-game set Sunday at 1:05 as they send Adam Mills (2-7, 4.60 to the mound against Jason Hirsh (7-7, 4.02).
