Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Cubs (56-46, 22-10) knocked off the Palm Beach Cardinals (55-46, 16-15) 4-3 Wednesday afternoon. Rebel Ridling and Junior Lake both homered in the win, and helped secure Daytona's 10th straight win.
The Cubs for the second straight day against the Cardinals got the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Second baseman Ryan Flaherty walked with two outs and moved to third on catcher Michael Brenly's double to the corner in left field. Flaherty scored on a wild pitch from Cardinals starter Scott Schneider to give the Cubs the early lead.
The Cardinals took advantage of the first Cubs error in seven games in the top of the fifth inning. Catcher Luis De La Cruz and second baseman started the inning with back-to-back singles. Shortstop Ryan Jackson then laid down a sacrifice bunt that went right back to Cubs starter Chris Rusin. The lefty tried to get the lead runner at third, but his throw was high and allowed De La Cruz to score and the other base runners to advance 90 more feet. Third baseman Cold Sedbrook brought in the go-ahead run with a ground out to the right side of the infield. Rusin got the next two batters to limit the damage to just two runs in the inning.
Palm Beach made it a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Cubs reliever Casey Lambert came in to replace starter Chris Rusin and issued a leadoff walk to first baseman Richard Racobaldo. The New Jersey native stole second to get into scoring position for Luis De La Cruz. The Cardinals catcher lined a single to center field with two outs to score Racobaldo and extend the Palm Beach lead.
Shortstop Junior Lake blasted his eighth home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 3-2 game. Lake has all eight of his home runs in the second half of the season and three in the past three games.
With Daytona down to their final five outs Rebel Ridling blasted his 10th home run of the season off relief pitcher Ramon Delgado bringing in Kyler Burke. The blast gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead and would be the deciding factor. Ridling now has five game winning hits in the 2010 season.
David Patton worked the final three outs of the ninth inning to pick up his third save of the season. Despite walking the bases loaded Patton was able to induce a lazy fly-ball off the bat of Richard Racobaldo to end the ballgame.
Jeff Beliveau (3-1) picked up the victory and Ramon Delgado (1-2) took the loss for Palm Beach.
The Cubs and Cardinals continue their series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. It will be a Thirsty Thursday out at "The Jack" courtesy of Danny's Lounge, VFW Post 1590 and VYB 103.3FM. Draft beers and sodas are just $1.
