Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Pete Ruiz accomplished a first for the Greenville Drive (57-44, 21-10) franchise in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Rome Braves (44-56, 14-16). The right-hander tossed a complete game shutout, albeit a seven inning one, as Greenville captured a 4-0 win at State Mutual Stadium.
Ruiz (7-7) scattered four hits during his outing, allowing one apiece in each of the game's first three innings, while walking none and striking out four. Up until the seventh inning, only one Rome baserunner was able to reach second base, as Bobby Rauh singled and stole second in the bottom of the third.
However, that would be the closest the Braves would come until their final at bat as Ruiz retired 12 consecutive batters. Trailing by four, Rome failed to push across a run as Riaan Spanjer-Furstenburg singled and advanced to third on Zach Gentile's fielding error.
The game's only runs came in the top of the first, as the Drive scored four times, all of which were unearned. Greenville only needed two hits off of Brett DeVall (6-7), who suffered the tough luck loss as the defense behind him committed four errors in the Drive's first at bat.
Jeremy Hazelbaker and Derrik Gibson began the frame by reaching on errors, before Chris McGuiness lifted a sacrifice fly. Following the Braves third error, which allowed Ronald Bermudez to reach base, Shannon Wilkerson delivered an RBI-single.
With two outs, the Drive's third run scored on a wild pitch, and Sean Killeen added an RBI-single.
The Drive will look to complete a four-game sweep over the Braves as they will now meet in game two of the doubleheader. Greenville will send right-hander Kendal Volz (6-3, 3.68 ERA) to the mound, while Rome counters with right-hander Jeffrey Lorick (3-3, 1.17 ERA) in the series finale.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on August 2nd for a 9-game homestand. The opener is "University of South Carolina Night" which will feature Gamecock football and baseball players, the 2010 College World Series National Championship trophy, Cocky, and cheerleaders.
