Peoria Chiefs News Release

Eastlake, OH - The Peoria Chiefs outhit the Lake County Captains Saturday night but lost 3-0 as Brett Brach fired a nine-inning complete-game shutout in the first ever matchup between the two teams. The loss drops the Chiefs to 10-16 on the half and 48-47 on the season.

Brach dueled with Chiefs starter Frank Batista as the outs were piled up early. The Chiefs had the best chance to score early after Brach made a two-out throwing error on a ball hit by Hak-Ju Lee in the third. But Lee over-ran first base and was thrown out trying to dive back into the bag by right fielder Greg Folgia. The Chiefs put two runners on base again in the fourth but Nelson Perez lined into a 6-4 double play to end the inning.

Batista, making his third career start, struck out the side in the second and fanned two more in the third. He retired the first two Captains in the fourth and had not allowed a baserunner when Casey Frawley stepped in. Batista worked ahead of Frawley but then hit the shortstop in the back with a two-strike pitch. Adam Abraham made Batista pay with his seventh homer of the season, a no-doubter off the shed in right-field for a 2-0 Captains lead. Batista ended the fourth with a strikeout and racked up two more to start the fifth before hitting his pitch count.

The Chiefs didn't get any baserunners against Brach in the fifth, sixth or seventh innings. Jonathon Mota ended the drought with a leadoff single in the eighth before Jae-Hoon Ha hit into the Chiefs third double play of the night.

Lake County added a run in the bottom of the eighth against Daniel Keefe. The first two batters reached on singles and Ben Carlson sacrificed to put runners on second and third with one out. After a groundout by Delvi Cid, a wild pitch from Keefe scored Kyle Smith for a 3-0 Captains lead. Matt Cerda reached with a two-out single in the ninth but Brach retired Justin Bour on a groundout to complete his shutout.

Batista (1-2) struck out a career-high 10 over 4 2/3 innings. He hit a batter and allowed two runs on just one hit. Manolin DeLeon fired 2 1/3 shutout innings with two walks and a strikeout. Keefe allowed one run on two hits and a wild pitch.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Frank Batista (RHP) - Batista made one mistake all night long and took advantage of his 65 pitch limit to strikeout 10 Captains. The right-hander set new season and career highs in innings pitched and strikeouts in just his third start.
