Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - A one-run West Michigan lead turned suddenly into a six-run advantage as the Clinton bullpen surrendered five late runs in a 7-1 loss to the Whitecaps. Tony Plagman went 3-for-5 with a two-run double in the seventh inning and another double and a run scored in the ninth to push the game out of reach.

The LumberKings took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Nick Franklin lifted a solo home run into the right-field Lumber Lounge. His team-leading 16th clout would end up being the only run Clinton would score off right-hander Victor Larez (W, 6-7), who scattered three hits over 7.0 innings and struck out five.

Right-hander Nolan Gallagher yielded the tying run with two outs in the second and Clay Jones lifted a towering double to the 401 sign in right-center, scoring Rob Brantley. The Whitecaps would take a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Wade Gaynor singled, moved to third on a double by Plagman and scored on Avisail Garcia's sacrifice fly to center.

Gallagher (L, 0-3) allowed two runs on six hits over 5.2 innings, but lost for the third-straight game as a LumberKing. He's received just one run of support over his 15.1 innings pitched.

The bullpen couldn't keep the game close for too long. Right-hander Jorden Merry gave up Plagman's two-run double with one out in the seventh, scoring both Corey Jones and Gaynor for a 5-1 lead. Right-hander Ryan Moorer was greeted in the eighth by a leadoff double from Clay Jones, who would later score on a wild pitch. The 'Caps extended the lead to 7-1 against right-hander Taylor Lewis in the ninth on another sacrifice fly by Garcia and RBI single by Jones.

West Michigan right-hander Matt Little pitched 2.0 scoreless innings and struck out three to finish the game.

Matt Cerione had Clinton's only multi-hit night as he went 2-for-3.

The LumberKings (10-9) conclude the series with the Whitecaps (7-13) tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Right-hander Taylor Stanton (6-4, 3.63) makes his 15th start of the season. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
